Pepys 350 – A Passion to Record
Anniversary Supper Lectures in Pepys’s "Own Church"
St Olave’s was the parish church of Samuel Pepys between 1660 and 1674 and he, his wife and one of his brothers are buried here. It was in 1660 that he started his world-famous Diary.
In his Diary Pepys referred to St Olave’s as “our own church” and his close association with it and the locality prompted us to host monthly lectures about him and his contemporaries. The series, called Parallel Lives, took place on Monday evenings throughout 2008 and was repeated in 2009. The lectures proved so popular that we decided to develop a 'special edition' for the 350th anniversary of the Diary in 2010. This is a unique chance for our generation to celebrate Samuel Pepys and we are expecting great things from this series. We do hope that you wll be able to join us.

Our lecturer, Graham Fawcett, will take us on a fascinating and enriching journey through Pepys’s world as we follow the Diarist month by month between January and July 1660 and see the parallels between his life and ours. The evenings will include musical items, slide presentations and readings to help us in our exploration of Pepys and his world .
Drinks and a hot meal are included in the admission price and help make for a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.
Lectures are to be held each month from January to July, the first evening, entitled The Diary Begins, being introductory in nature and setting the scene for the ensuing months. The main series will finish in July but there will also be a special lecture, Pepys and The Royal Society, on 29 November 2010. Pepys was President of The Royal Society in the 1680s and we are delighted that that great institution has agreed to endorse our event as one of over 70 taking place across the country under the banner Local Heroes and marking its own 350th anniversary.
Admission is £15 per person and payment may be made on the door or in advance. For advance bookings or further information contact Phil Manning.
